St Anne’s Almshouses, Appleby - Pinington Contractors start on-site
Thoughtful restoration Steeped in history, St Anne’s Almshouses in Appleby-in-Westmorland stand as a living legacy of Lady Anne Clifford’s vision from 1651. Haigh Architects are proudly undertaking the restoration of this heritage site, transitioning it thoughtfully and respectfully into the modern era for its residents and trustee’s.
Balancing History and Modernity This restoration reflects an exceptional commitment to sustainability and functionality. Our approach acknowledges the past while embracing advancements, ensuring these historic Almshouses continue to offer comfortable spaces for their residents and securing these beautiful buildings for generations to come.
Craftsmanship Rooted in Sustainability A deep understanding of traditional building materials lies at the heart of this restoration. Modern additions such as concrete and other non-breathable materials have compromised the structural health of these historic buildings by trapping moisture and fostering deterioration. The project involves carefully stripping out these elements to reveal the Almshouses original fabric, while introducing superior, breathable alternatives like insulated lime plaster and wood fibre to improve thermal efficiency.
Innovation as well as Tradition The integration of air source heat pumps exemplifies the careful blending of modern efficiency with heritage sensitivity. These technologies are delicately incorporated to avoid disrupting the architectural integrity of the Almshouses. We aim to restore original features and selectively introducing solutions to enhance energy efficiency and comfort without compromising the historic fabric of the buildings.
Haigh Architects take great pride in transforming these Almshouses, eagerly anticipating the moment when phase one will be completed and residents will once again call this historic landmark home.
